How Bidding on Auctions Works

How SuperRare auction bidding percentages are calculated, how the dynamic bid curve works, and why minimum bid increments change as prices increase.

When you place a bid on an auction, your bid must be at or above the current minimum bid shown in the bid modal. This minimum updates in real time as auction activity changes.

How the minimum next bid is calculated

For auctions with an existing highest bid, we calculate the required increase using two rules:

  • Dynamic curve increase: `increase = 0.1 × lastBid^(1.666 / 2)`

  • On-chain floor: `increase = 1% of lastBid`

We use the larger of those two values, then add it to the current highest bid.

If the auction has an additional configured minimum (for example, reserve/minimum bid settings), the final minimum shown is whichever is higher:

  • Calculated minimum next bid

  • Auction-level minimum bid

Why this model exists

This approach improves bidding behavior across different price ranges:

  • Lower-priced auctions still require meaningful bid progression.

  • Higher-priced auctions avoid unnecessarily large jumps.

  • The on-chain 1% rule is always respected.

Illustrative behavior

As bid size grows, the required percentage generally decreases (while never going below the on-chain floor):

  • Around `$1`: ~`10%`

  • Around `$1,000`: ~`3.16%`

  • Around `$100,000`: ~`1.46%`

  • Around `$1,000,000`: ~`1%`

Percentages are approximate and can vary slightly due to rounding/token decimals.

What you’ll see in the bid modal

  • Your bid: The amount you enter.

  • Minimum bid: The lowest currently valid next bid.

  • Total bid amount (+3%): Estimated total including fee.

For smaller bid amounts, we show enough decimal precision so meaningful fractional values are not visually truncated.

Important auction notes

  • Bids are binding once submitted.

  • If another bidder’s transaction confirms before yours, your bid can fail and you may need to rebid at the updated minimum.

  • Near auction end, block timing/finality can affect transaction outcomes.

FAQ

  • Why is the minimum bid sometimes more than 1% above the last bid?

Because the dynamic curve can require more than 1% at lower and mid-range prices. The 1% value is the floor, not always the exact increment.

  • Why did the minimum bid change while I was entering my bid?

Auction state is live. If a new bid is confirmed, the minimum next bid recalculates immediately.

  • Why did my transaction fail even though my bid looked valid?

Most often, another bid finalized first. Refresh and submit at the latest displayed minimum.
