What are Releases?

Releases provide an efficient and cost-effective method of minting a body of work for Artists, and an exciting new way to embrace collecting for Collectors.

Unlike the common minting process, which requires the upfront payment of gas fees per each artwork and the immediate deployment of digital assets onto the blockchain, Releases allow creators to postpone the actual minting until a collector expresses interest in purchasing the artwork (this mechanic is also commonly referred to as "lazy minting" or "delayed minting").

As a result, this method of releasing artwork is immensely cost-effective for an artist seeking to produce a big collection size: they can now deploy their collection with one on-chain transaction instead of minting each individual artwork one-by-one.

How to get started with a Release

Because Releases are optimized for publishing a large body of work all at once, some preperation is required! To get started, please refer to this help desk article: How to prepare your metadata .CSV file for Releases.

Releases from the Artists Perspective

Release offers several advantages for both artists and collectors. One of the primary benefits is the reduction of initial upfront gas fee costs. Instead of incurring gas fees for minting an artwork that may not be sold immediately, artists can delay the minting process until there is a confirmed buyer where the buyer pays for the gas fee upon minting.

Additionally, Release also adds a compelling mechanic where the next artwork will be revealed during the minting process as collectors aren’t shown the entire collection, elevating the whole minting experience for artists to tease and engage with collectors.

Releases from the Collector's Perspective

Releases contribute to a more streamlined and efficient art collection process. Once a collector decides to purchase a piece, the Release system triggers the necessary blockchain transactions to formally mint the artwork and transfer ownership.

And, for the first time on SuperRare, collectors can also mint multiple artworks under one transaction.

Releases maintain a sensation of unveiling the Series as it's minted: pieces are revealed, minted, and collected in succession, one after the next, until the series mints out. You cannot see the entire body of work at once. Instead, the series reveals itself as it mints out over time. As artworks mint out, the next one that becomes available to mint is unveiled.
